How to Apply a Kenyan Passport Online

The Kenyan Passport has been always applied online through eCitizen for over 6 years. The Directorate of Immigration Services i.e. DIS allows applications online and requires them to upload the required documents. In 2020, new passports were introduced known as the East African Community Passport. Application of passports is done online then forms alongside the printed invoice submitted to passport collection centres in Kenya. In this article, we talk about how to Apply a Kenya Passport Online using eCitizen.

Passports allow individuals to travel to other countries they are not citizens of. A passport would usually take 2 weeks to be ready but at some point it can even take 1 year depending on the status and the office. We share the required information and details for the passport application in this article.

In April 2024, the government revised upwards the application fees for passports hence we will share an article about the new passport application fees.

Requirements to Apply for a Passport in Kenya (East African Passport)

Before applying for a Passport, you need the following documents if you’re a first time applicant. Note that these documents should be scanned and in JPG file format and having the hard copies is nice as well.

  1. Applicant ID Card
  2. Applicant Birth Certificate
  3. Passport Photo of applicant on plain white background
  4. ID cards of parents if deceased death certificate
  5. Applicant signature on white paper

How to Apply for a Kenyan Passport Online using eCitizen

The procedure is not hard. It is so simple that it can be followed by anyone who wishes to apply. And it can also be done through the phone. Anyone who cannot can visit cyber to get assistance.

  • Open your Browser on Phone or PC
  • Search for eCitizen and log in using your ID and eCitizen password and enter the OTP to be able to access the system
  • On the eCitizen Dashboard click on the Department of Immigration Services Link or click on https://dis.ecitizen.go.ke/dashboard
  • Once on this page, click on Passport Application and select the passport ownership if it is yours or your child’s then click on Next
  • Read the instructions and click on Next. Declare your Nationality if you have Dual Citizenship
  • Select the type of passport, number of pages and also if anyone close possesses a passport in your family
  • On the next page fill in personal information and click Next to fill the Next of Kin Details
  • The third page requires children so this is the place for declaring the same, including the names, place of birth, date of birth and gender.
  • Proceed to the next page and upload the documents outlined above. Submit and pay the application fee and print the forms and invoice for payment. Book an appointment for biometric capture and wait for the day to go and capture your biometrics.

Note that the passport centers in Kenya are few. It is not easy to get the appointment the next day. Unless you have a certified urgency concern then you can go for biometrics any day.
