Kenya Revenue Authority collects revenue for the Kenyan government. The authority goes ahead to tax income that taxpayers have achieved through a specific period of time. In this case we talk about the kra Monthly Rental Income (MRI). Previously the tax on rent income was capped at 10% of the total rent collected. In January 2024, the percentage was reduced to 7.5% thanks to the finance bill 2023 which now allows landlords to pay only 7.5% of their income to kra. Remitting of the rental income is done on a monthly basis on or before 20th every month. In this article we discuss how to file kra Monthly Rental Income online and payment procedures.
Rental Income just like any other obligation can be filed twice. There’s an option to declare the income which you received. This allows for taxation of the amount you received. The second one is for those who haven’t made income as they can declare nil rental income and not pay anything at the end of the month.
Any person who has experience using a phone or PC is capable of declaring the rental income by themselves. All they need is the actual figure, the kra login credentials and always ways on how to pay. Filing KRA Rental Income returns is easy as it doesn’t involve any filling of tax documents. It is just as easy as payment of advance tax for motor vehicle owners.
