How to Pay NHIF Contributions using M-PESA

NHIF is a state parastatal in Kenya that has been established in Kenya since the year 1966. The institution allows Kenyans to pay monthly contribution that caters to their medical bills upon falling sick. In this article, you learn how to pay NHIF contributions using M-PESA paybill number 200222.

The NHIF membership is open to all Kenyans who have attained the age of 18 years. NHIF has 95 fully autonomous branches, satellite offices, and a presence in the 47 Huduma Centers across the country. Each of these branches and satellite offices offers comprehensive customer service.

How to Pay NHIF Contributions using M-PESA

Employed individuals have their contributions done by their employers. However, employers also can pay for the members using M-PESA. Though has a different procedure slightly when it comes to the account number. Contributions at NHIF are linked to individual National ID numbers that can be used to access the payments.

Self-employed or business people who wish to use NHIF need to pay Kshs. 500 monthly or pay Kes 6,000 for the entire year. NHIF does not allow a single payment of more than Kshs. 6,000. Below is the procedure: –

  • Be sure you have the ID number of the contributor and have M-PESA loaded with enough amount.
  • Go to the Safaricom Menu on your Phone and Select M-PESA option
  • Tap on Lipa na M-PESA menu
  • Select the Paybill option
  • Enter the NHIF Paybill Number 200222 and send
  • Key in your ID Number (ID number of the contributor)
  • Enter the Amount you wish to pay i.e. 500 for self employed for a month or 6000 for the whole year
  • Enter M-PESA PIN
  • Confirm the NHIF Business Number 200222 and the account number (ID No) and the amount and submit.
  • You will receive an M-PESA message confirming payment to the National Health Insurance Fund.
