Once in a while, you fail to pay the monthly contribution to NHIF. Here is a procedure on how to pay using M-PESA. Once you fail, NHIF penalizes contributors at the rate of Ksh. 50 per month defaulted. In this article, you will learn how to Pay NHIF Penalties using M-PESA from the comfort of your home.

To access NHIF service, you need to have paid your contributions up to date and this includes up to NHIF penalties for late payments. In this article, be sure to note down the procedure for penalties. It is similar to the normal contributions, however, the account number is different slightly for penalty payments.

The NHIF uses the NHIF Paybill Number 200222 you can use the Government paybill 222222 which can be used to perform payments to the institution. The procedure is simple, you don’t need a smartphone to do that. You can pay even with a feature phone.

How to Pay NHIF Penalties using M-PESA

Penalties for NHIF contributions are Kshs. 50 for every month that you failed to pay on time before the deadline of 9th every month. To pay for the penalties, be sure of the months that you were penalized and if they are 4 months multiply it by 50 and enter the exact amount while paying.

  • Go to Safaricom Menu on your phone
  • Select the M-PESA menu on the phone
  • Tap on the Lipa na M-PESA option that is displayed
  • Select the Paybill option do not pick the other options
  • Enter NHIF Paybill Number 200222 or 222222 eCitizen paybill number
  • Under Account No. Enter ID Number then add letter without spaces e.g if your ID is 12345678 the account number should be 12345678y
  • Enter the Amount you wish to pay
  • Enter M-PESA PIN and submit
  • Confirm the details listed included the Paybill Number, Account Number and Amount you wish to pay. You will receive confirmation message from M-PESA which is the proof of payment.
