How to pay NHIF penalties for individuals using M-PESA

NHIF is the National Health Insurance Fund that is responsible for providing individuals with medical insurance schemes. Individual pay monthly subscriptions of Kes. 500 to NHIF and in turn NHIF caters for their bills when they get ill. However, payment for the NHIF contributions is done monthly, and here is how to pay NHIF contributions using M-PESA. Payments are done monthly before the 9th Day. Since the government introduced eCitizen payments, ways of paying for such services have changed. Previous procedures of payment do not work. This article looks at how one can settle the NHIF penalties using M-PESA.

Requirements for paying NHIF penalties using M-PESA

• Member ID Number
• Amount to pay
• eCitizen M-PESA paybill number 222222
• The penalties payment account number i.e. NHIFP-ID NUMBER

Procedure on How to pay NHIF penalties using M-PESA thanks to eCitizen

The NHIF shifted from its previous paybill 200222 that individuals were used to and shifted to the government Paybill of 222222. This was a directive by the government and now all NHIF payments should be channeled to eCitizen Paybill number.

• Go to SIM Toolkit on your Phone
• Tap on M-PESA option or just use the M-PESA app
• Select the Lipa na M-PESA option from the options displayed.
• Select Paybill option to be able to pay the NHIF penalties
• In the Paybill field key in the eCitizen paybill number 222222
• For the account number for paying the NHIF penalties use NHIFP-ID Number for example if your ID number is 12345678 the account number would be NHIFP-12345678
• Enter the amount you wish to pay for the penalties and enter your M-PESA pin
• Confirm that payment is being made to eCitizen and submit the transaction.
