How to Register and Activate a HEF Account

HEF is the Higher Education Fund portal that allows students to apply for government scholarships and HELB loans. The portal replaced the previous HELB portal but the structure and everything are all the same. Before the application for scholarships through the Higher Education Fund, you need to have an account with the HELB. This account can only be registered on the HELB Portal. In this article, we outline the procedure for how to register and activate an HEF account.

The HEF account apart from applying for a HELB loan and HELB scholarship, the portal allows a series of other services. Account registration is important in accessing services from HELB. To register HEF Account, all that is required is a National ID and a functional email and phone number.

Requirements to Register a HEF Account

1. National ID Number
2. An active and working email address
3. A valid and working phone number
4. A passport photo (white background) – optional
5. Personal Details such as address, county, location and sub-location
6. Postal Address as well is needed during registration

How to Register a HEF Account Online

• Go to your browser and open it.
• In the URL bar type in the HEF portal link – https://portal.hef.co.ke/auth/signin and click on Register
• Select if you have a National ID or not
• Enter the ID Number and First Name as per the ID. Select the Type of ID if Kenyan or Non-Kenyan
• Enter the email address and set the password for the HEF account

How to Activate HEF Account Online

Once registered, an activation email of the HELB account is sent to the registered email. Below is how to activate the account before you can login.

• Open your Browser and open your email provider i.e. Gmail or Yahoo
• You can also check your email through the Phone and locate the HELB activation mail
• Click on Activate Account to be able to activate your HELB account and login to your HEF account.
